JOHOR BAHRU: Ayer Hitam incumbent Wee Ka Siong has no problem being associated with Prime Minister Najib Razak in the opposition’s campaign for the coming election.
He said it was a fact that Najib was the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and that MCA was part of BN, dismissing those who said a vote for him was equivalent to voting for Najib.
“They can also say a vote for Ka Siong is a vote for Khaled because he is my leader in Johor,” he said, referring to Johor Menteri Besar Khaled Nordin.
Speaking after the launch of the Tebrau MCA election machinery today, Wee said he left it to the Election Commission (EC) on whether to take action against DAP for its billboard featuring him and Najib together.
The three-term MP had been asked to comment on DAP’s move to restore a billboard stating that “a vote for Ka Siong is a vote for Najib”.
DAP’s earlier billboard had featured Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor. However, EC officers yesterday told DAP’s Ayer Hitam candidate Liew Chin Tong to take it down.
Rosmah’s picture has been omitted from the latest billboard.
Wee said it was fine for political parties to put up their pictures with other public figures if they thought they had done a lot for the people.
“You can put up pictures with Miss Universe, Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin.
“But to associate your opponent with something else is unethical. I would not stoop so low as to put up billboards linking Liew to the wealth of Mahathir’s children,” he said, referring to Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
On a separate matter, Wee said the two MCA members who had contested as independent candidates for the Puteri Wangsa state seat were no longer related to the party.
“They cannot use MCA as a basis to win the locals’ support,” he added.
Yesterday, Wee said MCA had sacked Lim Yak Hong and Ting Choon Chai.
Lim is a former councillor of the Johor Bahru City Council.
