Warisan denies exodus of hundreds in Sandakan

More than 700 Warisan members in Sandakan reportedly submitted their forms to join Umno in a ceremony in Batu Sapi yesterday.

TAMBUNAN: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr today dismissed reports that hundreds had quit the party in Sandakan.

He said Warisan had only 13 branches in Batu Sapi, Sandakan, and that all the branch leaders were still with the party.

Loretto told FMT that he had checked the list of the nine branches where leaders were said to have abandoned the party and found that they were never registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

The present registered branches in Batu Sapi are Kg Bokara, Kg Gas, Kg Lupak Meluas Darat, Kg Bonggaya 1, Kg Bambangan Hujung, Jalan Batu Sapi, Teck Hing Long, Utama Warisan Mawar Jln Sibuga, Kg Karamunting, Kg Bokara Tengah, Kg Istimewa, Kg Tabah Baru and Kg Lupak Meluas Laut.

Yesterday, 754 people who claimed they were members of Warisan left the party to join Umno in an event attended by Prime Minister Najib Razak and Chief Minister Musa Aman in Batu Sapi.

Nine of them claimed they were leaders of party branches in Batu Sapi, namely MPS Darat 02, MPS Jambatan 1, Kg Lupak Meluas, Kg Batu Sapi Darat 2, Kg Tabah Baru Laut, Teck Heng Loong Laut, Kg Di Sayang Laut, Kg Tabah Baru 2 and Kg Mautas.

Loretto said the event was just another tactic by Barisan Nasional (BN) to give the impression that the party was still the people’s choice.

“Everybody can say they are from this and that branch. Just check with the RoS and see if these branches really exist,” he said.

Commenting on the departure of Warisan Youth exco member Safari Adnan on Sunday, Loretto said while it was true that Safari had left the party, he had not brought 1,000 people with him as claimed.

“From what we have learned, he was the only one who left. But this is normal in any party, especially after nomination.

“Those who have been hoping to be named as candidates will either stay with the party or, if they are disappointed, they will usually contest as an independent or leave the party, like Safari,” he said.

He said Safari’s departure would only make Warisan stronger as it would not have to deal with members who had personal agenda.
