PETALING JAYA: Puchong incumbent Gobind Singh Deo has expressed surprise that his political rival Ang Chin Tat of Barisan Nasional (BN) has now pledged that toll for the LDP expressway will be abolished if he is elected.
“It is strange to note that neither his party (Gerakan) nor BN has done anything over the last 20 years to solve the problem,” he told FMT.
Gobind, who was elected Puchong MP in 2008, said he had taken the toll issue to the Dewan Rakyat but not a single Gerakan or BN representative had supported him.
“There was also no support from Gerakan when the toll rate was raised from RM1.60 to RM2.10,” he said.
Gobind said this in response to billboards being put up in the constituency of Tan promising to ensure zero toll on the LDP expressway. Tan is Selangor Gerakan chief.
Gobind, who is DAP national deputy chairman, said although the Selangor government was under Pakatan Harapan (PH), he could not do much as toll was a matter between Putrajaya and the concessionaire.
Gobind said PH had pledged in its manifesto to gradually reduce and finally abolish toll charges on highways nationwide if it was voted into power.
“Toll gates on the LDP will be removed as the concessionaire has recouped his capital expenditure and is now making profit,” he added.
He said Ang’s pledge only revealed that Gerakan and BN had failed the people and motorists using the 40km expressway.
Gobind also said Ang’s promise made during the election campaign was hollow as he would not be be able to carry it out.
“It is not for him to decide but for the BN government if they are voted into power.”
He said BN had burdened the people when it extended the concession to collect toll, adding that casting the ballot for Ang and BN amounted to voting for toll to be collected.
The 40km expressway costing RM1.4 billion was opened to traffic in 1999.
PAS’ Mohd Rosharizan Mohd Rozlan is the third candidate for the Puchong seat.
