I cried for 2 days straight, says PPBM hopeful declared a bankrupt

Penang PPBM information chief Yaakob Osman apologises to PH supporters in Penaga for his carelessness.

BUTTERWORTH: A PPBM leader said he cried for two days straight after being told he was a bankrupt when filing his candidacy for a state seat in Penang last Saturday.

Penang PPBM information chief Yaakob Osman said he never knew he was a bankrupt until that “fateful day”.

At a meet-the-people session at Paya Keladi in Kepala Batas here, he said his lawyers, who did a thorough search, revealed that he was declared a bankrupt over credit card arrears incurred 20 years ago.

He said the bankruptcy notice was sent to the address on the credit card, which was his former workplace on Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur, through substituted service.

A substituted service, or serahan gantian, is when a person is declared bankrupt through a notice at the registered address or an advertisement in the newspapers.

“I have been given a raw deal. I am so sorry to all Pakatan Harapan (PH) voters in Penaga for my carelessness.

“I had no idea that a notice had been sent to me.

“The question that needs to be asked is why were my bankruptcy records not updated online until April 28 (nomination day)? I was told about my bankruptcy on April 28.

“The next day, I instructed my lawyer to do another search and that’s when I discovered I had an unsettled credit card bill from 20 years ago.

“I was shocked. If you were in my shoes, you would know how lost I felt. I cried for two days straight,” Yaakob said.

He said the only way to correct this injustice was by voting for PH’s Kepala Batas parliamentary candidate, Dr Zaidi Zakaria, a medical practitioner.

Later, Yaakob also told reporters that the credit card company no longer existed as it had been merged with another bank.

“If I had outstanding bills, I would have paid them. But I was never aware of this. Also, if I am a bankrupt, why am I not barred from travelling out of the country?”

Yaakob’s dropping-out from the race has resulted in a straight fight between BN’s incumbent Penaga assemblyman Mohd Zain Ahmad and PAS’ Mohd Yusni Mat Piah.
