KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali says he didn’t know he would be named to the Cabinet in the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.
The PKR deputy president said he would now need to decide whether to remain as menteri besar or assume the role of economic affairs minister as it was not possible for him to be both.
“I only knew about this just now after I was informed by the Selangor state secretary,” he said when approached during a buka puasa event with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah here.
Azmin is both Gombak MP and Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyman.
In a surprise announcement, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said Azmin was selected to be one of the nine new federal ministers. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V has consented to the names submitted.
Azmin said Mahathir, who is chairman of PH and PPBM, had previously told him that he needed to play a role at the federal level but he did not realise he would be made a minister.
He said he was thankful to Mahathir, 92, for having faith in him to head an important ministry which carried major responsibility in the effort to rejuvenate the economy.
“I have informed the Sultan of Selangor about this and told him that I would meet the prime minister as soon as I can, by tonight if possible, to get clarification on the job scope entrusted to me,” he said.
“I will then meet the Sultan again tomorrow to decide which role I should play — whether I should stay in Selangor or work at the federal level.
“I definitely can’t hold both positions. Let me discuss with the prime minister about this,” he said.
