Anwar, daughter meet Johor sultan

PETALING JAYA: PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim and his daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar yesterday met with Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar at the Istana Pasir Pelangi in Johor Bahru.

According to a post on the sultan’s official Facebook page, Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim was also present at the meeting.

Anwar was seen greeting the sultan and shaking hands with Tunku Ismail, popularly known as TMJ.

Earlier this year, PPBM which is PKR’s fellow component party in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, decided to engage the Johor sultan through a series of dialogues.

This was to address the feud between the palace and PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is now the prime minister.

Sultan Ibrahim is one of two Malay rulers who have openly criticised Mahathir, the other being the sultan of Selangor.

PPBM Supreme Council member Tariq Ismail said at the time that PH had a lot of work to do to gain the trust of the palace.

“Sultan Ibrahim may be apprehensive over working with Mahathir, but this is where we need to build bridges,” he said.
