KUALA LUMPUR: All top posts in Umno, including the president and deputy president positions, will be open for contest at the party polls next month.
Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is assuming the duties of party president, said the Supreme Council had unanimously agreed to the proposal.
“All posts, including president and deputy president, as well as the heads of the three Umno wings, are free to be contested as enshrined in the Umno constitution.
“So there is no issue of no contest in Umno,” he said after chairing the Umno Supreme Council meeting here yesterday.
He said the decision was made to ensure that Umno could recover, and that public confidence in the party could be restored.
“As for myself and Hisham, we are open for the posts to be contested,” he said, referring to Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein who is assuming the duties of deputy president.
According to Zahid, branch-level elections will be held from May 19 to June 10, the election for the heads of Umno wings will be on June 23, and the election for Supreme Council members will be on June 30.
