PETALING JAYA: Former education minister Mahdzir Khalid has announced his intention to stand as a candidate for the post of Umno vice-president in the coming party polls.
The Padang Terap MP said in a statement that Umno needed a new approach to politics, organisation and how its leaders and members worked, as the old ways were no longer relevant.
“I feel it’s my responsibility to share my spirit, ideas and energy to ensure Umno is strengthened with honesty, so that we can win back the trust of the majority of the people.
“Let’s rise together to renew Umno’s struggles,” he said, in asking for Umno delegates’ support.
Apart from Mahdzir, who is Umno Supreme Council member, several big names have voiced their intentions to contest the position.
As of now, the other contenders include Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and former second finance minister Johari Abdul Ghani.
There are three vice-president posts up for grabs in the election later this month.
In other contests controversial Umno leader Jamal Yunos, Umno Youth vice-chief, Khairul Azwan Harun and former deputy minister Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, are gunning to be the next Umno Youth chief.
Former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is contesting the president’s post, while former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan will contest the deputy president’s post.
