TV thief walks away unnoticed from Penang mall

Police say the man escaped security as there was no one patrolling the area at the time.

GEORGE TOWN: Police today released images of a man walking away with a 40-inch TV which he unbolted from a booth selling massage chairs at a mall in Perai here two weeks ago.

In the 8.25am incident on June 6, the thief who is believed to be in his 20s was caught on camera unhooking the TV from a wall mount using only a screwdriver at Tesco Extra in Seberang Jaya.

Police investigators said the man made his getaway without much commotion as the mall had only been open for 10 minutes, with most of the shops still closed.

Central Seberang Perai police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said officers had swept the booth for fingerprints but failed to find any strong impressions.

However, a clear picture of the thief with the TV was obtained from surveillance cameras, with footage showing a man wearing a white T-shirt and brown pants leaving the booth with the TV under his arm.

Nik Ros said the losses were estimated at RM500. The TV was fixed there when the booth was set up three years ago, he added.

He said the worker who had lodged the police report had never seen the man before. According to the mall management, security guards were not patrolling the area at the time.

The case is being investigated for theft under the Penal Code.
