KUALA LUMPUR: Elections to the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri movements are being held at all 191 divisions today at delegates meetings which began this morning.
The elections are to choose leaders at both divisional and national levels.
The divisional election is to choose the local chief, vice-chief and 15 executive committee members.
The national election is for the posts of permanent chairman, deputy permanent chairman, chief, vice chief and 25 executive committee members at the central level.
Elections to the senior party’s Supreme Council, including the president and deputy president, will be held on June 30.
Three candidates are contesting to be Wanita leader: Siti Zaharah Sulaiman, a former Wanita leader; Noraini Ahmad; and Azizah Mohd Dun. Four others will vie for the post of Wanita vice chief.
A total of 81 candidates are vying for posts in the executive committee, two candidates for the post of Wanita permanent chairman and four candidates for the deputy permanent chairman’s post.
The Umno Youth elections have drawn 207 candidates. Two are vying for the post of the permanent chairman. three for the deputy permanent chairman’s post, nine to be Youth leader, nine for the vice chief’s post and the rest for posts on the executive committee.
Of the nine contesting for Youth chief include the current vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun, Supreme Council member Asyraf Wadji Dusuki, Pahang Youth chief Mohd Shahar Abdullah and the controversial Sungai Besar Division chief Jamal Md Yunos.
The post of Puteri chief is a contest between vice-chief Zahida Zarik Khan and exco member Nor Hazreena Mohamad Hashim.
Five other candidates will vie for the post of vice chief, 71 candidates for posts in the executive committee and two for the permanent chairman’s post.
The post of deputy permanent chairman was won unopposed by Salbiah Saari.
