Analyst sees Ku Li as the man to unite Umno

Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is one of five contenders for the post of party president.

PETALING JAYA: Political analyst Kamarul Zaman Yusoff has picked Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah as the man most capable of uniting Umno among the contenders for the party’s presidency.

Speaking to FMT, Kamarul said he believed the Gua Musang MP, compared to his four rivals, commanded the most respect in the party because of his royal blood and his record of service to the country.

He also said Razaleigh appeared to be the most sincere contestant among the contenders, who include Umno acting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.

“He has vowed to serve as party president for only one term and, since he is already 81 years old, he is seen as someone without high political aspirations,” he said.

“If he wins, Umno members are likely to listen to him as he is seen as the most sincere.”

Kamarul was reacting to a recent statement by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad about alleged disunity in Umno.

In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, Mahathir said the lack of unity made it hard for Umno to serve as an effective opposition party.

Kamarul also said Umno members would find it hard to fault Razaleigh because he was untainted by suspicions of corruption.

“Apart from being a clean guy, he is also seen as embodying the perfect balance between being too liberal like Khairy or too conservative like Zahid. This pragmatism is what is needed to unite the party.”
