Sungai Kandis: Umno determined to get PAS support

SHAH ALAM: Umno will go all out to form a working relationship with PAS for the Sungai Kandis by-election, says Selangor Umno chief Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Umno vice-president said cooperating with PAS is one of the ways for Umno to win the hearts of the voters in the constituency, the majority of whom are Malay Muslims.

“We will have a forum which will feature speakers linked to Umno and PAS, people like Shamsul Debat who is with Umno and Azhar Idrus who is linked to PAS,” he said at BN’s Sungai Kandis operations centre.

The former federal minister also revealed that the party was in talks to have Umno and PAS leaders share a stage during the campaign period.

“We are discussing it, perhaps we will have the Umno secretary-general share a stage with PAS’ secretary-general. Whether this materialises or not is not certain.”

Ismail also said BN’s campaign method this time around would be different, focusing more on social media.

This followed a freeze on the party’s bank accounts by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“We will create more infographics and WhatsApp them to the 32,000 registered phone numbers in Sungai Kandis. Every day, we will send ‘flyers’ to be distributed by the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings.”

He added BN would not host big ceramah and events during the campaign period and would instead focus on smaller venues, particularly those which were not linked to Umno, otherwise only party members would attend.

The Sungai Kandis by-election on Aug 4 will see a three-cornered fight among PKR, Umno and an independent candidate. PAS has decided against fielding a candidate as it was still studying the findings of its GE14 post-mortem report.

The by-election was called following the death of assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafei on July 2 from cancer.
