GEORGE TOWN: PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today expressed hope that the Balakong and Seri Setia by-elections can be held on the same day.
He said even though the two seats had fallen vacant on different days, it had happened within a short span of time.
“In terms of preparations, it would be easier for both by-elections to be held concurrently, be it the nomination day or the polling day.
“This would be better than holding the Balakong by-election first, and then only the Seri Setia by-election.
“Whatever it is, we leave it to the discretion of the Election Commission (EC). They will be the ones to decide on the dates. We are just taking part in the by-elections,” he told reporters after a briefing on the Mutiara Food Bank here today.
The Balakong seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman, Eddie Ng Tien Chee, 40, of DAP, in an accident on the Grand Saga Expressway on July 20.
Nomination for the Balakong by-election is on Aug 18 and polling on Sept 8.
EC deputy chairman Othman Mahmood yesterday said whether both by-elections could be held simultaneously would depend on the outcome of the EC meeting as many aspects had to be taken into consideration, including the location, workers and logistics.
The EC will meet next week to set the nomination and polling dates for the Seri Setia by-election, which is set to take place following the death of assemblyman Shaharuddin Badaruddin two days ago due to colon cancer.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin said the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership hoped to settle the registration of its logo with the EC soon.
He said in a recent PH presidential council meeting, the leaders had discussed PH’s wish to use a common logo for the Balakong and Seri Setia by-elections.
“However, we need to resolve a few things first. For one, PH’s registration has already been done. On the other hand, we need to look into the registration of our logo with the EC.
“When all these are settled, the PH leadership will announce in the near future the status of the usage of the PH logo,” he said.
