DAP’s Balakong candidate yet to be confirmed, says Guan Eng

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says the party needs to meet before a decision is made on who will be its candidate in the Balakong by-election.

GEORGE TOWN: DAP will announce its candidate for the Balakong by-election once a meeting is held and the matter discussed, party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.

Lim said at this juncture the meeting has yet to take place.

“There has been a lot of speculation in the press about who will be the candidate. A decision will only be announced when we have had our meeting.

“We have not had our meeting. I will inform you later. We need to hold discussions first,” he said here today.

Lim declined to say anything further, stating that he had “nothing more to add to the matter”.

Speculation has been rife that prominent Chinese broadcast journalist Yunna Tan will be DAP’s candidate for the upcoming Balakong by-election.

Tan once hosted two popular prime-time Chinese current affairs programmes – “Evening Edition” and “Prime Talk” – on the Astro AEC channel.

The Balakong seat is vacant following the death of its assemblyman, Eddie Ng Tien Chee, 40, of DAP, in an accident on the Grand Saga Expressway on July 20.

Nomination for the Balakong by-election is on Aug 18 and polling on Sept 8.
