KUALA LUMPUR: The government proposes to reduce the number of special Tuesday draws for all number forecast operators, starting next year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the new policy would be announced during the tabling of the 2019 Budget expected on Nov 2.
Fewer draws would help curb excessive gambling which caused social problems, he said in reply to a question by Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang).
Wong wanted to know whether the government would continue to allow number forecast operators to hold their special Tuesday draws next year.
The number forecast operators are Sports Toto, Magnum, Damacai, Malaysia Pool, Sarawak Turf Club, Sandakan Turf Club and The Rewind Corporation.
Lim said the special draws, which are additional to the normal draws, were approved by the government in 1999 as a source of tax revenue that went into a trust fund to finance specific objectives.
He said that in the first year, RM80.4 million was collected, which rose to RM238 million last year, making an average of about RM200 million each year.
The funds raised were used to support sports activities and projects, social welfare, culture, health, education, development and training, he added.
