PETALING JAYA: Several Umno leaders turned up in a show of support today for Dr Halimah Ali, PAS’ candidate for the Seri Setia by-election.
Halimah, who was at the Petaling Jaya City Council’s Dewan Sivik to submit her nomination papers, was accompanied by Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Wanita Umno leader Noraini Ahmad and Lokman Noor Adam who was Barisan Nasional’s candidate in the recent Sungai Kandis by-election.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan were also present.
Halimah and PKR candidate Halimey Abu Bakar arrived at about 8.30am.
Several Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders were also there to show support for Halimey, including PKR’s Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, Gombak MP Zuraida Kamaruddin and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
About 100 supporters of PKR, PAS and Umno were seen waiting outside the hall despite the rain which began falling shortly after 8.30am.
The Seri Setia state seat in Selangor fell vacant following the death of assemblyman Shaharuddin Badaruddin of PKR, who died of colon cancer on Aug 2.
Shaharuddin won the seat in the May 9 general election with a 19,372-vote majority in a four-cornered fight with Umno’s Yusoff M Haniff, PAS’ Mohd Ghazali Daud and independent candidate Vigneswaran T Subramaniam.
Umno had said it would make way for PAS in the Seri Setia by-election, to reciprocate the Islamist party’s decision to skip the Sungai Kandis by-election on Aug 4.
