KUCHING: Sarawak today declared three more areas as rabies-infected, bringing the total number of such areas to 36.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said the new areas are Sungai Tenggang and Pantu in Sri Aman and Simpang Kawasan Layar in Betong.
A spokesman of the committee secretariat said the decision to declare new rabies-infected areas was made by Deputy Chief Minister Douglas Uggah Embas in his capacity as chairman of the committee.
The three new areas are outside a 10km radius of locations that have also been declared rabies-infected.
Yesterday, the federal health ministry said a 44-year-old man had died of rabies encephalitis on Tuesday, the 12th person in the state to succumb to the disease since an epidemic was declared on June 30 last year.
