KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno’s Wanita wing today urged Parti Warisan Sabah to clarify its stand on the identification card (IC) issue in the state.
Its chief Jainab Ahmad Ayid said there had been contradictory and confusing statements on the matter from both Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking and Upko acting president Wilfred Madius Tangau.
“Leiking was reported to have proposed an additional identification card for genuine Sabahans without having to recall existing MyKads issued in Sabah.
“Tangau, on the other hand, proposed the recalling of MyKads issued to Sabahans and re-issuing them with a Sabah IC.
“So what is the stand of the state government, actually?” asked Jainab, who is the Sepanggar Umno Wanita chief.
Tangau was also reported to have said that the issuance of Sabah ICs was something the party had been pursuing all along.
He said the process of recalling and reissuing MyKads could be done as the Malaysian IC had been changed many times.
Leiking, who is the international trade and industry minister, said the MyKad was already proof of citizenship, whereas the proposed Sabah IC, if introduced by the government, would be for recording who the Sabahans are.
Leiking said any recall of existing MyKads for re-issuance would be impractical due to the possible legal implications.
Jainab however said Warisan should not make statements just to please Sabahans.
