BALAKONG: Balakong by-election candidates Wong Siew Ki and Tan Chee Teong had a cordial meeting at a polling station here today as voters continue gathering to cast their ballots.

Wong, from DAP, arrived at SJK(C) Batu 11, Cheras at about 9.30am today to visit the polling centre.

Tan, from MCA, had arrived earlier at 9am together with his parents who were casting their votes.

The rivals, who have met many times throughout the campaign period, shook hands with each other upon meeting at the Election Commission’s polling counters.

Speaking to reporters after her visit, Wong said she was satisfied with the voter turnout so far.

“I just saw two boxes which were almost full, but it’s still too early to say now. I hope everyone will come out to vote as the weather is nice,” she said.

Wong, who is not a registered voter in the Balakong constituency, said she felt regretful as she could not see her name together with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) logo on the ballot papers.

“I hope to see it later if I have the chance,” she added.

Wong is a registered voter in Seri Kembangan, a state seat under the Puchong parliamentary constituency.

Balakong meanwhile is one of three state seats under the Bangi parliamentary constituency.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Eddie Ng of DAP in a car crash in July.

A total of 62,219 voters are expected to cast their votes for the by-election today.

Another by-election is being held at Seri Setia, where PKR’s Halimey Abu Bakar faces PAS candidate Dr Halimah Ali.

The Seri Setia by-election follows the death of Shaharuddin Badaruddin who passed away from cancer last month.
