PETALING JAYA: PAS has decided to skip the Port Dickson parliamentary by-election which PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim will contest.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision was reached in a meeting chaired by party president Abdul Hadi Awang in Kuala Terengganu, where the PAS muktamar is being held.
Takiyuddin said the party felt the by-election was contrived and against good democratic practice.
“It is a waste of public funds and time, and will undermine public interest in voting.
“Furthermore, the Port Dickson seat has no potential for PAS to field a candidate,” he said.
He said PAS will support any candidate from Umno or MIC to contest the seat, adding that the opposition presence in Parliament must be strengthened.
Yesterday, Port Dickson MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah resigned to make way for Anwar in his preparation to return to Parliament and eventually take over as the 8th prime minister as agreed by Pakatan Harapan.
