KUALA TERENGGANU: Top Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders attended the opening of the PAS muktamar here today.
The likes of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MIC deputy president SK Devamany were present at the 64th annual congress, seated together with leaders from Gagasan Sejahtera (GS) partners Ikatan, Berjasa and Parti Cinta Malaysia.
It is the first time the BN leaders have attended the muktamar, since the Islamist party quit the coalition in 1977.
Two days ago, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad were also present at the PAS youth and wanita wings meetings.
Zahid’s attendance at the muktamar follows an invitation extended to him by the Islamist party.
PAS and Umno have made no secret of their cooperation, notably in the Sungai Kandis and Seri Setia by-elections, where they made way for each other to contest, and voiced support for the other party’s candidate.
