PETALING JAYA: Terengganu’s Sultanah Nur Zahirah is going ahead with a defamation suit against Clare Rewcastle-Brown, despite the Sarawak Report editor’s apology over remarks in her book allegedly linking the royalty to the 1MDB scandal.
Mohd Haaziq Pillay, a lawyer representing the sultanah, said the statement Rewcastle-Brown made yesterday did not amount to an apology.
“We will explain more during a press conference tomorrow,” he said when contacted.
It was reported that the sultanah would file a defamation suit against Rewcastle-Brown, accusing her of linking her with Low Taek Jho, the fugitive businessman at the heart of the 1MDB scandal.
Following this, Sarawak Report said the sultanah had misunderstood the passages in the book “The Sarawak Report: The Inside Story of the 1MDB Expose”, but added that reprints of the book had corrected the mistake of naming the sultanah.
“The book does relay information that Jho Low boasted of mixing socially with the royal family and herself and, as with many of his business ventures, cited his social connections as opening doors to opportunities, such as his obtaining an advisory position on the TIA,” the portal said.
It said Jho Low was closer to the sister of the sultanah’s husband, Sultan Mizan.
“On this basis later print runs of the book have removed the reference to the wife of the sultan and instead refer to the sister of the sultan as being Jho Low’s prime social connection in Terengganu,” it said.
