KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth deputy chief Shahril Hamdan expects the two-day Umno General Assembly to be “more frank” than previous years.
He said delegates are expected to voice out their opinions on the direction of the party.
“Delegates are expected to give their views on matters close to their hearts. (Be) more frank,” he told FMT after a photoshoot session with Umno leaders.
Almost all Umno supreme council, Wanita and Puteri wing leaders were present. However, former president Najib Razak and Hishammuddin Hussein, who did not contest in the party polls, were not at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).
The atmosphere this morning seemed more subdued without the usual booths selling clothes and food stuff.
Only a small section of PWTC lobby is open for traders to sell food.
The crowd in the morning also seemed smaller than in previous years.
Earlier, there was also a flag-raising ceremony attended by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to mark the opening ceremony of the 72nd Umno General Assembly.
This is also the first time the assembly is held in September. It is usually held in late November or early December.
The party’s wings – Youth, Wanita and Puteri – will hold their meetings simultaneously today while the main body will meet for only one day on Sept 30.
This is a departure from the previous practice of dedicating two days each for the wings and its main body to debate motions on politics, economy and religion.
Previously, when Umno was part of the government, resolutions passed in the assembly would be forwarded to the prime minister, who was also the party president.
