KUALA LUMPUR: Several PAS leaders were spotted at Umno’s 72nd General Assembly today for the first time ever as talks of a possible alliance between the two traditional rivals persists.
PAS Youth chief Khalil Abdul Hadi and the Islamist party’s women’s wing chief Dr Nuridah Mohd Salleh arrived at 8.15am with an entourage. They were welcomed by Umno leaders.
Khalil is the son of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
The presence of these PAS leaders come two weeks after Umno leaders, including president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, attended the opening of the PAS muktamar in Terengganu on Sept 15.
Zahid subsequently invited PAS to attend Umno’s general assembly.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man is also expected to attend later.
Ties between the two parties began thawing last year, with Umno and PAS leaders sharing the same stage on several occasions.
Their relationship further strengthened after the May 9 polls, most notably in the Sungai Kandis and Seri Setia by-elections where they made way for each other to contest and supported each other’s candidates.
Earlier this month, Zahid and other leaders from the party and Barisan Nasional showed up at a PAS ceramah in a historic first.
Zahid had previously said the cooperation between PAS and Umno was “not just rhetoric” but a surefire way to challenge PH in future elections.
He also said the two parties would be working closely together in the future.
