PD polls: No character assassination, warns Anwar

PORT DICKSON: PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has called on all party members and leaders to refrain from using any form of character assassination during the Port Dickson by-election campaining period.

Saifuddin was relating an instruction given by PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim during a meeting with party leaders earlier.

“Anwar met party leaders and members earlier today and said that he will not condone this kind of campaigning.

“We will concentrate on revealing the agenda that Anwar has fought for these past 20 years.

“If our opponent throws dung at us, we will not behave the same.

“We will offer them flowers in return and entertain them with smiles,” he told reporters at a press conference after the launching of the PH operations centre here.

Apart from that, Saifuddin said this time around, PH will be introducing more non-conventional campaigning methods, including engaging with voters through one-to-one phone calls.

“We will not be holding too many ceramahs like we did during the 14th general election. Instead, we will be emphasising more on meeting people face-to-face.

“This kind of approach is important for PH and PKR, especially in view of the low percentage of votes cast in the three by-elections recently — Sungai Kandis, Seri Setia and Balakong.”

He expected Anwar’s candidacy to see a higher voter turnout this time in Port Dickson and said the 70% vote turnout expected by the Election Commission was achievable.

Anwar is expected to face a five-cornered contest.

Danyal Balagopal Abdullah stepped down on Sept 12 to give way for Anwar to contest the seat and return to Parliament.

Nominations for the Port Dickson by-election will be from 9am to 10am today (Saturday) at the Port Dickson Municipal Council. Polling is on Oct 13.
