KUALA LUMPUR: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has urged party members to shoulder equal responsibility to restructure the party for the next general election.
He said the responsibility should not be just on the top leaders but on all members.
“We had administered the country for 60 years but we made a few mistakes, but that does not mean we cannot recover, we must have the will to do so,” he said in his winding-up speech at the Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Mohamad said he felt the spirit of the party was slightly different this time around as delegates were free to speak their minds without creating any issues.
“All have agreed the party needs to be reformed. That is why we need to have a blueprint with discussions among the three wings,” he said, referring to the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings.
Mohamad said the party was being criticised by others but it was also keeping tabs on developments on the “other side”.
“We can then put forward their mistakes one by one. For instance, if there is more unemployment, we can raise the issue.”
He also asked the party president to review suggestions to allow branches to appoint their heads as it could lead to money politics.
He also urged the respective divisions to speed up the registering of new members as the membership list should be updated.
Former party president Najib Razak was present for the winding-up session.
