PORT DICKSON: Lt Col (Rtd) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar, PAS’ candidate in the Port Dickson parliamentary by-election, has vowed to do his best to serve the people through the party as it has always been his aim to do so after leaving the Royal Malaysian Air Force 10 years ago.

After completing his primary and secondary education in Johor, Nazari joined the military service in 1980 as a cadet officer.

During his service, he also pursued two diplomas in Financial Management from Universiti Utara Malaysia in 1989 and in International Training Methodology from Institut Tadbiran Awam Negara (Intan) in 1994.

He was also conferred a Diploma in Aerospace & Security Management (1983) and a Diploma in Nation Building & Armed Conflict (1996), by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Australia and Canada, respectively.

Nazari, 57, also holds a Masters in Defence and Strategy Studies from the Islamic University of Technology in Gazipur, near Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He left the military service in 2008 and is currently a principal of a tahfiz centre in Batu Pahat.

The by-election sees a seven-cornered fight involving Nazari, PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim, and five independent candidates, namely former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Isa Samad, Anwar’s former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, social media personality Stevie Chan Keng Leong, Kan Chee Yuen and Lau Seck Yan.

The Election Commission has set Oct 9 for early voting and Oct 13 for polling.
