KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman today defended his former party president Najib Razak, stating that the latter had done a lot for Malaysians.
“You enjoy prosperity in this country, but who built it?
“Many countries failed even though they have the resources, like Myanmar and Afghanistan,” he said at the sidelines of the Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Tajuddin, the Pasir Salak MP, said the former prime minister had contributed a lot to the country.
“Malay, Chinese and Indians, Najib has helped many people. He has given opportunities for all to study.
“He created proper funds and built hospitals, highways and ports. You take it for granted and say anyone can do it,” he added.
Tajuddin said people should ask Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng on the number of roads, highways and hospitals he had built.
He was asked the reason for the overwhelming cheers for Najib last night as he was warmly welcomed at the general assembly with shouts of “Hidup Najib”.
Najib, who is now an ordinary party member, had attended party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s policy speech.
Najib resigned as the Umno president three days after Barisan Nasional’s shock defeat in the polls.
He has since been slapped with dozens of charges related to abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.
Tajuddin said Umno members hold on to the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
“Many people have been charged in court but even after many years of trial, they are proven innocent.
“(Even) Anwar Ibrahim is a free man,” he said, referring to the PKR president-elect who is contesting the Port Dickson by-election.
