PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak says the revelation by Bersih 2.0 that its complaints against PKR election offences had received no follow-up action by the Election Commission (EC) points to selective action by the electoral body.
This followed a police report lodged against Najib by the EC over an election offence during the recent Sungai Kandis by-election.
“This means Bersih has washed its hands of the matter and is accusing the EC of bias, for only lodging a police report against me and not PKR or its candidate.
“I would like to hear the EC’s explanation. As a body which is supposed to be impartial, Bersih’s claim is very serious,” Najib said in comments on his Facebook.
Yesterday, Bersih, the coalition which has been fighting for electoral reforms, said it had also made complaints about election offences by Sungai Kandis assemblyman Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, the PKR candidate who won the by-election on a Pakatan Harapan ticket in early August.
Among Bersih’s complaints were PKR’s offer of free motorcycle engine oil, health checks and medication, as well as the misuse of government assets during the campaign period.
Bersih also complained about Najib campaigning after the midnight deadline on Aug 4.
Following the EC’s police report against Najib, Bersih said the body must be fair by also investigating offences committed by PKR.
When contacted, EC chairman Azhar Harun said he would get more details on the matter as it had happened before his appointment. Azhar reported for duty on Sept 28.
