Civil servant named DG of Indian upliftment unit

S Letchumanan has served in various positions within the civil service since 1989.

KUALA LUMPUR: Civil servant S Letchumanan has been appointed as the new director-general of the Socio-Economic Development Unit for the Indian Community (Sedic) effective Oct 12, succeeding Prof N S Rajendran.

Letchumanan is the under-secretary of the international division at the communications and multimedia ministry.

In making the announcement, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy said: “Letchumanan is a career Administrative and Diplomatic Service (PTD) officer who has served in various positions within the civil service since 1989.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank Rajendran who will be returning to academia after six-and-a-half years of stewardship at Sedic and who has served the community with dedication.”

Waytha Moorthy, who holds the National Unity and Social Well-Being portfolio, said the new team at Sedic would work towards meeting the targets and aspirations outlined in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto for the Malaysian Indian community.

He said Sedic’s programmes would focus on key areas including education, youth empowerment, economy, career enhancement and social development, which will contribute to the uplifting of the socio-economic position of Malaysian Indians.

“Programme results and outcomes will be monitored and measured to ensure that public money is utilised effectively,” he said.
