PETALING JAYA: A director of a construction company claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to three charges of committing criminal breach of trust involving funds worth a total of RM5.3 million.
According to the charges, MEACS Construction Sdn Bhd director Yee Wee Kiong, 45, had been entrusted with 57 cheques totalling RM5,350,874.97, but had misappropriated the funds.
All the offences were allegedly committed at Hong Leong Bank, Taman Serdang Perdana branch in Seri Kembangan here, between March 31, 2014, and March 29, 2016.
He was charged under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping and fine, upon conviction.
Earlier, DPP Ashy’ari Kamaruzaman suggested that bail be set at RM500,000 in one surety.
However, the father of three, who was represented by lawyer Vivek Sukumaran, sought a lower amount, on the grounds that he was the family’s sole breadwinner.
“The complainant and the accused are the directors and shareholders of the company. They are siblings and have been partners since 1999.
“In this case, they had problems in making a joint decision on the use of money for business purposes,” said Sukumaran.
Judge Hilmiah Yusof set bail at RM100,000 with one guarantor and ordered the accused to hand over his passport to the court.
She set Nov 21 for mention of the case.
