PORT DICKSON: Anwar Ibrahim today said his by-election victory today was proof he enjoyed strong support from voters of all races and backgrounds, adding that it was a sign of continuing confidence in the Pakatan Harapan government which came to power on May 9.
“I am extremely pleased and humbled by the results,” said the PKR leader, minutes after he was declared the winner, defeating six others in the Port Dickson by-election.
Anwar said there was “total support across races”, adding that there was also a big increase in support from soldiers registered as voters in the constituency.
Anwar garnered a total of 31,016 votes, defeating his closest rival, PAS’ Mohd Nazari Mokhtar who gained 7,456.
His 23,560-vote majority surpassed that of former Port Dickson MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, despite a low voter turnout of 58.3%.
Meanwhile, Anwar said he had called Dr Mahathir Mohamad to thank him for his support.
“He was pleased with the results,” said Anwar during a press conference attended by top PH leaders, including PKR deputy president aspirant Rafizi Ramli.
Anwar later addressed thousands of supporters who gathered at the Port Dickson Municipal Council building.
