KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet is reviewing allowances and standard operating procedures (SOP) for firefighters following the death of six Fire and Rescue Department divers who drowned while trying to rescue a teenager earlier this month.

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said firemen presently received RM100 as part of critical allowances, among others.

“The issue of giving more allowances to firefighters has been brought up at the Cabinet.

“Firemen carry out dangerous work. I too urge (the government) to increase their allowances,” she said at the Dewan Rakyat today.

She added that a committee comprising experts and NGOs had been set up to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“They will look at ways to improve the SOP because the officers who died were trained officers,” she said.

The six firemen had been on a search and rescue mission for a teenager who fell into a disused mining pool in Puchong.

Police said they had followed SOP but were caught in a strong whirlpool.
