Cops record statement from Hishamuddin Rais over blog post

Activist Hishamuddin Rais says he will give his cooperation on the case.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police today recorded a statement from activist Hishamuddin Rais following a report lodged against him over an article containing allegations against a politician which was uploaded on his blog on Sept 18.

Hishamuddin spent about 40 minutes giving his statement at the Sentul district police headquarters at 2.30pm. He was accompanied by his lawyer Zaid Malek.

“During the process, I answered all the questions about the article uploaded on my blog. However, questions related to the investigation of the case, I will only answer in court.

“I am ready to continue to cooperate on this case,” he said after giving the statement.

The article uploaded on his blog,, urged Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Cabinet ministers and chairman of the government’s advisory council Daim Zainuddin to set up a royal commission to investigate the irregularities and abuse of power of a current politician leading a government-linked company.

Meanwhile, his lawyer Zaid Malek said his client was investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation.

Zaid, however, disagreed with the police investigation.

He said the complainant only lodged the police report through a member of his staff.

“Actually, the complainant should file a defamation suit first then only investigations can be carried out by the police for defamation,” Zaid said.
