Man who stole bike to pay for wife’s surgery jailed

KUANTAN: The Magistrate’s Court here today sentenced a garbage collector, who pleaded guilty to stealing a motorcycle to pay for his wife’s surgery, to a year’s jail.

Magistrate Nor Azizah Aling, when handing down the sentence on Raja Saddam Shah Raja Hamkar, 27, said stealing was an offence no matter the reason.

“In life, we have to realise that not everything is easy, there’ll be hitches and obstacles along the way. It’s true, you were going through difficult times, but (stealing) is not the way,” she added.

She ordered Raja Saddam Shah, who is from Felda Bukit Kuantan, to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest, which was Oct 6 this year.

He was charged with stealing a Honda EX5 motorcycle belonging to Zul Zaidde Ngamera, 32, between 9pm and 9.50pm in Kampung Seri Mahkota Batu 12 here last Oct 1.

In mitigation, Raja Saddam Shah said he was desperate for money to pay for his wife’s surgery.

“I’m a garbage collector with a salary of about RM800 and seven people in the family to support. I promise not to make the same mistake,” he added.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Shahrizzat Amadan prosecuted.
