83 detained over temple fracas

Police have detained 83 individuals so far to assist in investigations into the riots at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, near here last week.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said all those detained were locals and that many more were being tracked down.

“We detained 83 individuals as of 8am today, and more are being hunted,” he told reporters after a convocation ceremony for Kolej UniKop at Maktab PDRM here today.

He added that several other individuals involved in the fracas were blacklisted yesterday.

Bukit Aman CID director Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said yesterday that the police were looking for 28 witnesses to aid in investigations, urging them to come forward and cooperate.

The fracas which took place on Monday and Tuesday morning followed a dispute over the relocation of the temple to a new site. A fireman, Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, was seriously injured in an assault and is currently receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute.

The rioters also injured a policeman, torched 23 vehicles, damaged a building and disturbed the public peace.
