16 more arrested over temple fracas

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested another 16 individuals to facilitate the probe into the violent protest at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, near here last week, bringing the number of people detained to 99 as of 9am today.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the latest arrests were made around the Klang Valley.

“We are now investigating whether the 16 arrested are part of the group of 28 witnesses sought earlier,” he told reporters after attending a function at the Police Training Centre here today.

Fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim was seriously injured in the fracas which took place on Nov 26 and 27 following a dispute over the planned relocation of the temple. Adib is currently receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute.

In addition, 23 vehicles were torched and a building was vandalised.

Checks by Bernama today found the area still monitored by members of the Federal Reserve Unit.
