Dewan Rakyat Speaker rejects Anwar’s motion to debate ICERD

Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim says the confusion over ICERD needs to be debated.

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof today rejected a motion from Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Port Dickson) to debate the controversial International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Ariff said his decision was made based on Standing Order 18.

“As we know it needs three conditions which are based on the circumstances.

“I don’t consider the matter needs to be debated immediately,” he said.

He said he had allowed Anwar to explain the substance of his motion on the human rights treaty.

Anwar earlier said he had submitted a motion to debate the issue at the Dewan Rakyat but it was rejected by the Speaker.

He said he brought up the motion in the Dewan Rakyat today as it is the place to give their opinions.

The PKR president said there was confusion on the matter which needed to be debated.

Umno and PAS plan to hold a mammoth rally in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to “celebrate” Putrajaya’s decision not to ratify the ICERD.
