Perkasa: Call to axe death penalty a ploy by criminal lawyers

The Malay rights group claims the lawyers are acting in the interest of their clients.

GEORGE TOWN: Malay rights group Perkasa today claimed that the call for the death penalty and the Sedition Act to be abolished was an attempt by criminal lawyers acting in the interests of their clients.

In a statement, Perkasa urged the government not to be “misguided” by civil society groups such as Lawyers for Liberty, Amnesty International, Suhakam and the Bar Council who have called for the laws to be repealed.

Describing the death penalty as a “solid law”, the group said the move to abolish it was as an adoption of “foreign policies” which went against Malaysia’s rule of law and did not have the wellbeing of its people at heart.

“A few NGOs are fronted by criminal lawyers paid to act in the best interest of their clients, the criminals.

“They have cleverly worked together with the many liberal lawyers in our government, with some MPs in active private practice, to push forward this initiative,” the statement read.

Perkasa called for the full disclosure of ministers, MPs and lawyers with vested interests.

It said the anti-graft officers must probe the MPs who might be biased towards the criminals and used their powers to influence decisions in Parliament.

Perkasa said the government should also call for a referendum to ask the people if they wanted the death penalty and the Sedition Act to be repealed.

The group claimed that surveys and petitions had shown that over 80% of people wanted them retained.

Perkasa said if the death penalty and the Sedition Act were removed, crimes would flourish.

It said that with the high crime rates, the government should focus on enforcing the law, instead of repealing laws that protect the people.

“The rights of the majority count more than those of 1,281 inmates on death row.

“Lessons must be learnt from the abolishment of the Internal Security Act (ISA) which has compromised our rule of law and national security.”
