Ex-Padang Besar police chief charged with sexual assault on women

KANGAR: A former Perlis district police chief today claimed trial to charges of forcing two women to perform oral sex on him on two separate occasions last year.

Former Padang Besar police chief Ghazani Ab Ghani, 49, was charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature.

In the first charge under Section 377C of the Penal Code, he was charged with committing the offence on a 29-year-old woman in a Ford car outside MRSM Arau between 12.10am and 1am on Oct 31, 2017.

In the second charge, Ghazani was charged with assault or use of criminal force to a person with intent to outrage her modesty under Section 354 of the Penal Code.

In the third charge, he was charged with committing the offence against a 36-year-old woman in a Perodua Axia near MRSM Arau between 10pm and 11.30pm on July 3, 2017.

In the fourth charge, Ghazani was charged with assault or use of criminal force on her with intent to outrage her modesty under Section 354 of the Penal Code.

Ghazani faces a maximum of 20 years’ jail and whipping under Section 377C of the Penal Code for committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent.

As for offences under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault, he can be jailed 10 years, fined and/or caned.

Justice Ibrahim Osman set bail at RM30,000 and ordered the accused or his agents to not disturb the victims.

He then set Jan 29 for a mention.

Ghazani nodded when the charges were read to him.

As the court stood down, he evaded press photographers. Photographers chased after a man wearing a balaclava who walked together with his lawyers while Ghazani left through another door.

Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani prosecuted while M Puveneswaran and K Kumaran appeared for the defendant.

Ghazani, who holds the rank of superintendent, has been in charge of the staff at the Kedah police headquarters’ administration department since Feb 28 this year.
