PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim today renewed his support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad following suggestions that the flight of Umno MPs would threaten the PKR leader’s position while strengthening PPBM.
Anwar, who is the prime minister-in-waiting, said there were attempts to pit him against Mahathir.
“I continue to support the efforts and leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir, and will continue to work closely with him to realise the Reformasi agenda as has been agreed upon,” he said in a brief statement today.
It comes after 10 Umno MPs quit the party last week, in what analysts say could spell trouble for Anwar’s PKR as well as others in the Pakatan Harapan coalition.
PPBM has however dismissed concerns that the former Umno leaders would be roped in to join the party, which could increase its parliamentary share.
The party also assured its allies that it would only consider those who were not involved with the “grand corruption of the previous administration”.
Earlier today, another influential Umno leader Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik applied to join PPBM, prompting concerns from DAP.
Anwar himself had a few days ago said that PKR had rejected former leaders from Sabah Umno who wanted to cross over to the party.
