PETALING JAYA:
The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting on Wednesday to decide the nomination and polling days for the Cameron Highlands parliamentary by-election.

The EC Chairman, Azhar Azizan Harun, will chair the meeting which will take place in Putrajaya, secretary Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar said in a statement.

“The meeting will decide important dates like the writ for the by-election, nomination day, polling day, early voting and the electoral roll that will be used for the by-election,” he said.

Elias said a news conference will be conducted after the meeting.

Last month, the Election Court revoked C Sivarraajh’s victory in the May 9 general election after it found that money was used during the campaign to buy votes.

Sivarraajh, who is MIC vice-president, last week said he would not challenge the election court’s decision, and that the Barisan Nasional opted to fight for the cause of the people in a by-election rather than going to the Federal Court.

Cameron Highlands has traditionally been an MIC seat. Sivarraajh had won the constituency with a 567-vote majority.

FMT has also learnt that the EC today notified the Dewan Rakyat Speaker that the Cameron Highlands seat is now vacant after the court issued a certificate confirming this.
