Razis Awang was also sentenced to two years’ jail for possessing images of the group. The two sentences will run concurrently from the date of his arrest, March 30, 2016.
Earlier, the 32-year-old appeared cheerful, chatting with his friends and family members but broke into tears upon being hugged by them after he was sentenced.
Judge Azman Abdullah handed down the sentence after the defence failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
In his judgment, Azman advised Razis not to repeat his mistakes and hoped that he had learned his lesson.
“As a teacher, you are supposed to be the first person to be aware of this matter (terrorism) but unfortunately, you have been found guilty of what you did.
“Besides this (jail) sentence, I believe you will also lose your job as a teacher,” the judge said.
Earlier, in mitigation, Razis’ lawyer, Syahredzan Johan, urged the court to take into account the accused’s contributions as a teacher and the fact that he had never spread terrorist ideologies but only expressed support through the Telegram application.
Razis, Syahredzan argued, did not openly show support for IS including on the social media.
Deputy public prosecutor Munirah Shamsudin @ Baharum asked for a heavy sentence against the accused as the offences committed by him could threaten national security.
On July 7 last year, Razis pleaded not guilty to the charge of knowingly pledging support for the terror group in 2016.
He was also charged with possessing six images relating to the terror group in his mobile phone and three images in his laptop.
