
In a statement, Khaled who is former Johor menteri besar thanked the Umno president for his contributions to the party and expressed gratitude for his decision to let Mohamad take the reins.
“After six months of facing defeat and all sorts of challenges, it is hoped that the party’s ‘Islah’ (reform) agenda will continue to flourish under the new leadership.
“I urge all supporters and members, be it at the branch, division or state level, to support and assist Mohamad in carrying out his duties.”
Khaled also urged the Malays to unite and help Umno, and to give their views and criticism for the good of the party and the community.
Yesterday, Zahid announced that he was handing over his duties to his deputy with immediate effect.
“Based on the turmoil being faced by the party today, I have decided to entrust my deputy with carrying out the duties of the president,” he said last night.
Over the past week, Umno has lost many of its MPs, assemblymen and divisional leaders. They are expected to join PPBM once their applications are approved.
They blamed their exit from Umno on the party president, saying there was a lack of direction in the party.
This led to calls for Zahid to take leave to sort out the 46 criminal charges he is facing.
