KOTA KINABALU: While speculation is that Sabah Umno members who quit the party recently would join PPBM, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president Jeffrey Kitingan said some of them were eyeing to join his party.
Without naming them, the Keningau MP said they had submitted membership application forms to his party.
“It is very difficult to give the exact number at the moment because we haven’t met yet. There are some but I cannot mention the names until it is confirmed,” he told a local daily recently.
He said they would probably meet next year as the former Sabah Umno leaders were still part of Gabungan Bersatu Sabah, the opposition coalition formed in the aftermath of Barisan Nasional’s defeat in the state.
“The question is what party will they use? I would also like to know if they had become PPBM members,” Kitingan said.
He also questioned the assurance from PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the ruling party would not set up base in Sabah, saying the party’s membership forms were being distributed to Sabahans.
“I’m a little bit confused. But I hope they will not come,” he said.
Sook assemblyman Ellron Angin joined STAR a week ago after quitting Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, a former BN component party.
Kitingan had claimed that former Upko assemblyman Bobbey Suan (Nabawan) would also join his party but that the former was out of the country then.
