KUALA TERENGGANU: A “love scam” syndicate in Terengganu is using Islam to prey on victims, state police chief Aidi Ismail revealed.

He said the conmen would fleece their victims of thousands of ringgit on the pretext of wanting to learn more about Islam

“They will persuade their victims to deposit a sum of money (to help them learn more about the religion), sometimes up to hundreds of thousands of ringgit, even if they have only known each other online,” he told reporters here today.

Aidi said 53 cases involving these “love scams” were reported in the state last year with losses amounting to RM12 million.
