KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Shafie Apdal said the Sabah government will study various aspects of a proposal to recognise the Javanese and Bugis communities as natives

He said the proposal must be scrutinised to avoid disputes and without marginalising the ethnic groups in the state.

“In addition, we will also look at the positions of the existing villages, such as the Chinese community, which has a headman (kapitan),” he told reporters at a Chinese New Year event tonight.

Sabah Law and Native Affairs Minister Aidi Moktar drew criticism for suggesting that the natives status should be extended to the Javanese and Bugis communities.
