3 die as crane hits beam, bringing down shophouses being built in Juru

GEORGE TOWN: Three workers lost their lives and three others were seriously injured when a crane hit a beam and brought down a row of shophouses under construction in Juru, Bukit Mertajam.

Central Seberang Perai police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said crane operator Kumar Patchumuthu, 46, of Simpang Ampat, and Rohingya refugee Rofi Khan, 32, died on the spot.

Another Rohingya refugee, Amir Udin Abol Kasim, 20, died due to his injuries later at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

Nik Ros said another Rohingya man, whose age is not known, and a 30-year-old Indonesian man were seriously injured.

They are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department, about 30 construction workers were at the site during the incident at 4.50pm.

They were minutes away from finishing their work.
