PETALING JAYA: Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) prioritises the prime minister’s speech in its coverage of events attended by government leaders, the minister in charge of the state broadcaster said today in response to a complaint by a minister’s aide.
“The SOP within RTM clearly states that where the prime minister attends an official function, then it is only his speech that is cast live through RTM,” said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
This followed his query with RTM over a criticism by an aide to Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook after the broadcaster omitted his boss’ speech during the live telecast of the 2019 Chinese New Year Open House in Seremban.
Loke’s press secretary Lim Swee Kuan took to his Facebook page to accuse RTM of sabotage.
Loke has since distanced himself from the matter, saying it was Lim’s personal opinion.
Gobind said RTM should not be blamed for following its SOP.
But he added organisers could still discuss with RTM on its coverage of a live telecast.
“Unfortunately, in this particular case, there was no such request. RTM in following their SOP, therefore rightfully only aired the prime minister’s speech live for the event.
“This too, I am informed, with the express agreement of the organiser of the event, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture,” said Gobind.
