LANGKAWI: The health ministry will not be proceeding with the proposal to set up a real estate investment trust (REIT) to source for additional funds for the ministry, said its minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He said the decision was taken after conducting several studies which were sent to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for consideration. These were later tabled at Cabinet meetings and discussed with the finance ministry before a final decision was made.
“After the prime minister asked the health ministry to review the proposal, we found other better financial instruments.”
He said the ministry had decided against using REIT to generate funds for the development and improvement of ministry facilities.
“I have other options to consider,” he told reporters after attending the “Sihat Walafiat” Islamic Forum at Al Hana Mosque here last night.
Making vaccinations compulsory
On another matter, Dzulkefly said the ministry would be tabling a proposal and policy to make vaccination compulsory.
He hoped to bring the matter to the Cabinet for further discussions.
“I believe there will be arguments for and against the proposal.
“The health ministry will consider all views seriously,” he said.
